“It’s going to take their breath away…there’s going to be a lot of people on the therapist’s couch…People are going to start drinking a lot.” Manhattan public relations consultant Rachelle Pachtman said as she reflects on how some New Yorkers will handle the recent financial crisis on Wall Street. A friend of mine sent me this article that highlights some of the consequences and reactions to Wall Street’s recent quake. While the possibility of greater taxes does not exactly encourage a self-supporting missionary, the opportunities to engage those struggling with the financial crisis does. Jesus said some very stunning things about it being difficult for the rich to enter the kingdom of Heaven. Jesus knew how easily we would love money or depend upon money or look for our life, our salvation from money. I hope Rachelle is right, that people are going to be drinking a lot as a result of these financial challenges. It is my prayer and expectation though, that we’ll see many people begin to drink from the fountain of living waters (Jer 2:12-13). God often uses crisis’s in peoples’ lives to help bring them to Christ. Pray with me that many will come to know Christ in Manhattan these days as they realise what they’ve been trusting in, is not so trust worthy. Pray that they will receive our offer of a much sweeter drink than what they are used to. Pray that many will begin to drink Living Water.
